EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL & BOPFEST
presents…

The 60th Anniversary of Dave Brubeck’s “Time Out.”

Marking the 60th anniversary of its release, this concert is a complete reimagined performance of one of the most iconic jazz albums of all time, Dave Brubeck’s “Time Out”, hosted by pianist Nick Tomalin and featuring on alto sax Paul-Desmond-specialist Allison Neale.

Released in 1959, Time Out was the first jazz album to sell a million copies. Its exploration of unusual time signatures such as 9/8 and 5/4 paved the way for other artists to experiment playing jazz in different meters – a trend which continues to this day. Recorded at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York City; it featured the hit single Take Five, written by Paul Desmond, as well as other Brubeck classics such as Blue Rondo A La Turk and the ethereal Strange Meadow Lark, creating a sound that defined the era.

1959 was also a landmark year for several other influential jazz albums – Miles Davis' “Kind of Blue”, Charlie Mingus' “Mingus Ah Um” and Coltrane's “Giant Steps” also came out in that same year.

Pianist Nick Tomalin has performed at many prestigious jazz venues in the UK, both with his own bands and as sideman for some of the country’s leading jazz musicians including Jim Mullen, Don Weller and Alan Barnes.

"Allison Neale plays the alto saxophone with a tone so light and airy it positively melts at the edges."
Dave Gelly, The Observer
