TYPE OF EVENT : Jazz Orchestra / Big Band

Bringing Big Band Jazz to South London

Based in Brixton, the SLJO brings you an afternoon of swing, jazz and Latin charts harking back to the golden era of the Big Band. From their collection of over one hundred members, today’s band will feature the full 17-piece line up for a one-off performance as part of their Mini-SLJO series.

The band regularly performs right across the capital, at pubs, jazz clubs, bandstands and local events. They count the Ivy House in Nunhead, Bulls Head at Barnes, the Ealing Jazz Festival, and Dulwich, Sydenham and Wandsworth Arts Festivals amongst previous top gigs. The band travels extensively, having performed at the Stockholm, Montreux and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, and will return to the latter this August.

The set will feature favourites from some of the greatest Big Band leaders of all time – Stan Kenton, Count Basie, Buddy Rich and Gordon Goodwin, alongside some clever reworkings of tunes you might not expect a Big Band to play!

GENRES: Dinner Jazz

Bringing you a selection of beautiful and swinging jazz standards performed by a singer from Amsterdam and a jazz pianist from London. This new exciting collaboration of Charlotte and Alex takes you on an engaging journey through some of their favourite classics. Expect songs from Rodgers, Porter and Gershwin.

Charlotte de Graaf - Charlotte is currently a member of the band Kid Creole & the Coconuts, with which she tours across the world. After graduating at the University of the Arts in Amsterdam she performed in several different theatre productions. Her love for jazz is never ending and having a background in theatre, sharing stories with the audience is what thrills her the most. The dutch newspaper Volkskrant described Charlotte as a "Talented and Engaging singer"

Alex Hutton - Hutton is an accomplished pianist on the London Jazz scene. Over the last 15 years he has worked with most of the leading figures, (Jim Mullen, Bobby Wellins, Art Themen, Pete King, Don Weller, Dave O Higgins, Dave Green, Pete Wareham.) He has also won the appraisal of the late Ronnie Scott who described Hutton as a ‘great British talent and a wonderfully natural pianist’.
