Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Dorothy Ashby’s 1968 Album Release

Dorothy Ashby was one of the "most accomplished modern jazz harpist”, who established the harp as an improvising jazz instrument, beyond earlier use as a novelty or background orchestral instrument, proving the harp could play bebop as adeptly as the instruments commonly associated with jazz, such as the saxophone or piano. Renown harpist Alina Bzhezhinska is celebrating 50th anniversary of the release of Ashby’s most innovative album “Afro-Harping” with her new formidable band featuring Gareth Lockrane (Flute), Christian Vaughan (Keys), Joel Prime ( Drums) & Julie Wal ... .

“Bzhezhinska played with conviction,...a strong sense of rhythm and superb use of dynamics.”
*****Three Weeks, Edinburgh Festival

“…Bzhezhinska really demonstrates her skill and no string is left unused...”
Music Maker Magazine

Originally from Lviv, Ukraine, Alina Bzhezhinska has become one of the leading harpists in Britain. She has performed with many major European orchestras including the National Opera in Warsaw and Scottish Opera. Alina’s London appearances include Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, BBC Radio 3, the London Jazz Festival and London Film Festival. Alina’s critically acclaimed solo album “Harp Recital” is believed to be the first pedal harp CD made in Scotland. She appeared in a DVD of the American group Harp Fusion and a CD by jazz group New Focus and performed at the 12th World Harp Congress in Sydney, Australia.
