TYPE OF EVENT : Young Jazz Musicians, Jazz, Dinner Jazz

The UK is home to some of the world's finest music academies, several of them are in London and one in particular, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, is virtually on Toulouse Lautrec's doorstep. We've decided to offer GSMD students a residency they can call their own, to give our audience and us an opportunity to get to know these exceptional up and coming young players. We'll be seeing a lot of them in the future, but why wait?
Come down any Monday night and enjoy a lot of them right now.

This week Guildhall in Focus presents

Sadie Roach (Piano & Vocals) & Emily Roberts (Guitar)

Sadie Roach and Emily Roberts are both 19 years old, studying jazz at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Emily started playing the guitar at nine years old, and at 16 found a special interest in jazz, going on to study at the Chetham's School of Music during which she was a member of the Chetham's Big Band and the Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra. Alongside the performances at the Guildhall School, she also will be playing in the West End Olivier award-winning production 'Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour' at the Duke of York's Theatre.

Sadie started playing the piano at seven years old and, with the influence of her father, American blues musician, Michael Roach, she has been singing, playing, and listening to jazz, soul and Black American music from a very young age. She studied piano in her father's hometown Washington D.C., at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and has performed at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival for two years in a row, listed as the number one top recommended gig to go to during the Festival in 2017, by Cotswold blogger 'lewisloves'. Despite coming from different musical backgrounds, Sadie and Emily, having met at the Guildhall School, play with each other frequently and have learnt to work well together. With a voice reminiscent of Nancy Wilson and the late Dinah Washington, Sadie will be singing and playing the piano with Emily on guitar, covering and putting their own spin on classics from Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, and Etta James to Nina Simone.
